Ms. Communication

Or rather, miscommunication is the root of so much strife in the world, from interpersonal relationships to global politics. With technology sprinting ahead faster than we can thoroughly grasp it, opportunities for miscommunication have multiplied. Take for instance text messaging or even e-mail – both are extremely effective communication tools, and yet their lack of dimension can lead to simple misunderstandings, which can then blossom into a complicated mess. Tone, cadence and intention can all be easily misconstrued when sending a message to a friend, colleague or client. An e-mail that is too succinct can be misinterpreted as blunt or demanding; a brief text message can lead one to wonder, “Are they really fine with this, or does ‘OK FINE’ mean they’re not ok?”

The meaning and purpose behind an electronically delivered message can certainly get a little confounded at times. So if you’re ever worried whether you can clearly get your point across in an e-mail or text, if there’s just too much nuance that will be lost in the electronic word, then simply pick up the phone and make a call or walk on over to your colleague’s desk and say it in person. There’s a much better chance your message won’t be lost in translation. OK FINE?
